Check engine light and computer diagnostics using the Snap-on MODIS diagnostic platform.
More than reading a code
A trouble code tells you which system noticed a problem. It doesn’t tell you what caused it. A single code can point to a sensor, a wiring fault, a vacuum leak or a mechanical problem, and replacing parts until the light goes off gets expensive fast. Real diagnosis means testing, measuring and confirming the cause before anything gets replaced.
Snap-on MODIS: dealer-level diagnostics
Snap-on’s MODIS platform is a professional diagnostic system built for technicians who fix the hard ones.
Full-function scan tool
Reads codes and live data from engine, transmission, ABS, airbag, body and other modules, and runs system tests.
Lab scope & graphing meter
Graphs electrical signals in real time to catch glitches and intermittent faults a code reader never sees.
Guided component tests
Step-by-step tests show exactly where to connect and what a good reading looks like, so parts are proven bad before they’re replaced.
Real-world fix data
Built-in repair intelligence from fixes on similar vehicles, plus manufacturer service bulletins, points us to likely causes faster.
Problems we track down
- Check engine light, flashing or steady
- Rough idle, misfires, hesitation and stalling
- Hard starts and no-starts
- Electrical problems: lights, gauges, power accessories
- Batteries that keep dying
- ABS, traction control and airbag warning lights
- Transmission shifting problems
- Intermittent problems
How to help us find it faster
- When does it happen: cold start, warmed up, at certain speeds?
- Is the warning light steady or flashing?
- Any recent repairs, new parts or a low-fuel situation?
- Can you make it happen on demand? Tell us how.
Flashing check engine light? That usually means a severe misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. Ease off, avoid hard acceleration and call us.
Common questions
Can’t the parts store just read the code?
They can read it, and that’s a fine starting point. But a code is a symptom, not a diagnosis. We test to find the cause so you only pay for the repair you actually need.
Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?
If it’s steady and the vehicle drives normally, it’s usually OK to drive it in soon. If it’s flashing, or the vehicle runs poorly, overheats or loses power, stop driving and call us.
Do you work on all makes?
Yes: domestic and import cars, trucks, SUVs and diesels.
